VIVA NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2009 - SAVED BY THE BELL

Saved By The Bell:
Where Are They Now?

A.C. Slater played by Mario Lopez.
The wrestling ‘jock’, Albert Clifford Slater (yes, that really was his name!) was the tough guy of the gang who was an instant hit with the ladies.

Mario went on to star in the series’ spin off; Saved by the Bell: The College Years and then popular US cop series Pacific Blue.  Several TV movies followed and then a stint on US soap The Bold and the Beautiful.

Then came Mario’s relaunch in the third season of Dancing with the Stars where he competed against the likes of Jerry Springer and another teen sensation, Joey Lawrence.  He made the final but lost out on the title to NFL star Emmitt Smith.  Mario is currently starring in top drama, Nip/ Tuck, and commentates on HBO Boxing and has written a self help fitness book – he’s been a busy boy!

Saved By The Bell

Jesse Spano played by Elizabeth Berkley
Jesse was the brains of the gang.  Beautiful, intelligent and a strong feminist but she dated macho sports jock A.C. Slater, which made for a roller coaster relationship!

Former model Elizabeth has probably had the most controversial career of the six stars. Having left SBTB to pursue a Hollywood career, she landed the part of Nomi Malone in the infamous movie Showgirls, and shed her geeky, girl-next-door-image by playing a no-holds-barred stripper!

After Showgirls was universally panned, Elizabeth took on several small roles in films like The First Wives Club, Any Given Sunday and The Curse of Jade Scorpion.  She then went on to play opposite Eddie Izzard in London stage play Lenny and then made her Broadway debut in the acclaimed play HurlyBurly.

Since then Elizabeth has had a number of guest roles in top rated series including CSI, NYPD Blue, Without a Trace and Law & Order: Criminal Intent and has recently starred as a regular in the sixth series of hit lesbian drama The L Word.

It’s rumoured that Elizabeth is making a show for MTV in America – our lips are sealed but watch this space!
Success rating: Rating: Five Stars

Zack Morris played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar

The undisputed teen heart-throb of the series, Zack’s cute yet cheeky good looks had the girls swooning!

MP (as his friends call him) has had a bit of a mixed bag career wise.  He, like Mario, starred in the SBTB spin off and then went on to appear in a number of TV movies.

In 1998 he starred in the ill fated series Hyperion Bay, which also starred Carmen Electra fact fans!  In 2001 MP got a part in top cop show NYPD Blue, playing Det John Clarke for four years, and then Commander in Chief alongside Gina Davis.  Most recently, MP has been starring as Jerry Kellerman in courtroom drama Raising the Bar.

MP had a three year relationship with his SBTB co-star Lark Voorhies, but met his now wife on the set of the SBTB one-off special Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas.  MP is now married with two children.
Success rating: Rating: Three Stars

Lisa Turtle played by Lark Voorhies

Lisa was the rich kid whose designer style was the envy of her class-mates and was constantly fighting off the affections of school nerd, Screech.

Lark started her career at the age of two but SBTB was her break through part.  She starred in the SBTB spin offs but has never really done anything as successful since.  She’s appeared in a number of TV movies and had guest spots on shows like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Fresh Prince of Bell Air.

In 1994 Lark was in a group called the X-Girls with Stacee and Yashi Brown (nieces of Michael Jackson!) but then went solo and is due to release her new single called Backyard in the new year and is rumoured to be playing Whitney Houston in an upcoming biopic of the superstar’s life.

Lark had a brief relationship with American funnyman Martin Lawrence, who she was engaged to for a short while, but it didn’t last the distance.
Success rating:  Rating: Two Stars

Kelly Kapowski played by Tiffani-Amber Thiessen

Miss Junior America in 1987 and former model, Tiffani won the role of cute cheerleeder Kelly, who was Zack’s love interest and on-off girlfriend.

After having starred in a number of SBTB spin offs, Tiffany was cast by Aaron Spelling in the original hit teen soap, Beverly Hills 90210 playing bad girl Valerie.  Tiffany then went on to try for Hollywood stardom but with minimal success and no movies of note except a part in a Woody Allen film Hollywood Ending.

Tiffany went on to star in short lived sitcom What About Brian but is now rumoured to be pregnant with her first child.
Success rating: Rating: Two Stars

Samuel ‘Screech’ Powers played by Dustin Diamond

Screech was the geeky nerd who was such a dork that it was amazing that his much cooler, and let’s face it far better looking, cohorts let him be in their gang.

After SBTB, Dustin was the only one of the six stars who went on to appear in the ‘next generation’ style series, Saved by the Bell: The New Class.  Dustin appeared in several reality and game shows such as The Weakest Link, Celebrity Boxing and has most recently been seen on VIVA’s top celeb series Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Wrestling.

Dustin also appeared in Celebrity Fit Club losing 30 lbs but didn’t endear himself too well with his fellow contestants having stand up rows and even walking out at one stage!

Dustin is also a stand-up comedian, plays bass in a rock band and has written a tell-all book about his years in SBTB.  And he even has been ‘victim’ of a sex tape which was released under the title Screeched although it is rumoured he set it up in an attempt to boost his profile!

Success rating:  Rating: One Star  (for wrestling with the legend that is the Hulk!)  Not only has he let the school down, he’s let his friends down and most importantly, he’s let himself down.
